The legend

You always hear her before you see her

In boarding schools across Nigeria, there is a story the students only tell after lights out.

A teacher in red high heels, walking the corridors long after everyone has gone to bed.

Koi... koi... koi... You always hear her before you see her.

They say she was cruel to the children in her care. They say the children paid her back.

They say she never left. And anyone who looks at her disappears.

Madam Koi Koi is one of the best-known boarding-school legends in Nigeria: a teacher in red heels whose footsteps you hear in the corridor after lights out. Our game is set in one of those schools, the year the legend stopped being a story.

The opening

  1. IKENGA MEMORIAL SECONDARY SCHOOL Closed 2010.
  2. Seventeen years ago, my brother Emeka was found dead in the boys' hostel. The police said it was a break-in. He had told everyone otherwise.
  3. His diary was never found. Mama has asked about it every Sunday since.
  4. Tonight I came to get it. The gate chain locked itself behind me. I did not touch it.

What the older boys always said

Three rules

  1. Listen for the heels

Koi... koi... koi. Her red heels on the tiles tell you where she is, which way she is walking, and how fast she is coming. When they speed up, she has heard you.

  2. Stay out of the dark

Your flashlight keeps your nerve together, but its battery runs down and its beam shows her where you are. Darkness steadies nothing: the longer you stay in it, the more your hands shake.

  3. Do not look at her

Meet her eyes for too long and you disappear, like the others did. Look away, back off, find a door to put between you.

Who's who

Characters

The people in the story, as the school's own papers remember them. No spoilers.

  • You

    Tobe

Emeka's younger brother. Seventeen years after Emeka died, Tobe climbs the gate of the closed school to find the diary their mother has asked about every Sunday since.

  • SS3, the brother

    Emeka Nwosu

Found dead in the boys' hostel in his final year. The police called it a break-in. Emeka had told everyone otherwise, in letters home that stopped making sense.

  • English, SS2

    Madam Adaeze Okonkwo

Remembered in staff memos for her red heels on the corridor tiles and her cane. Spoken to three times by the Vice Principal. Dismissed after the incident of 9 March.

  • Room D to Room I

    The SS3 boys

Chidi, Obinna, Tunde, Kelechi, Ugochukwu and Emeka. Six names on the hostel roll call. By the next year, every one of them was gone.

  • At home

    Mama

She never stopped asking about the diary, and never stopped praying. Her letters are somewhere in the school too.

  • Red heels

    Madam Koi Koi

    Listen. Don't look.

The school

Ikenga Memorial Secondary School

Closed in 2010. Two floors, a hostel, a yard and a back fence, and one way out: the chained gate at the end of the main hallway.

  • The main hallway

One long tiled corridor joining everything, with the chained gate at the far end. Most of the tube lights are dead.

  • The classrooms

Chairs facing the door, chalk still fresh on the boards. Some of the messages were not written by students.

  • The staff room

Her chair is still pushed in.

  • The Principal's office

Where the school decided what the police would be told.

  • The library

Every book has been turned face down.

  • The sick bay

The register lists every boy who couldn't sleep that term. The last page is torn out.

  • The boys' hostel

Iron bunks, wardrobes that won't stay shut, and the roll call by the door.

  • The yard and the back fence

Open sky, a dead tree, and the fence where it all ended.

  • The second floor

Closed after that year. The stairs are still there.

How to play

Find the keys. Find the truth. Get out.

Three staff keys open the gate, and you can't leave until you've found every piece of evidence. She is in the building the whole time.

  • Her ears

She hunts by sound as much as sight. Sprinting, slamming doors and knocking things over all carry. Crouch-walking is quiet; holding your breath is quieter.

  • Her eyes

She notices you from twice as far when your flashlight is on. Turning it off hides you, and leaves you in the dark.

  • Hiding

Squeeze into a locker or a wardrobe, crawl under a bunk or crouch beneath a desk. She checks hiding places, one by one. Keep your light off, because she sees the glow.

  • Chases

Being spotted isn't instant death. She comes for you, and you get a chance to run, break her line of sight, and hide.

  • Battery and nerve

Batteries are scattered through the school. Let the light die and your nerve goes with it.

  • Evidence

Letters, memos, a punishment book, a sick bay register, a newspaper clipping. Every page goes into your journal and tells part of the story. You need all of it to leave.

  • Keys

Three staff keys open the way out. They are somewhere different every time you play.

  • Two endings

You can simply escape. Or you can understand what she wants, and decide what to do about it.

From the evidence

What the school wrote down

Three of the sixteen documents you'll find, as they appear in your journal.

  • Staff Memo, Term 2, 2009

Madam Adaeze Okonkwo (English, SS2) is reminded that her red heels are to be worn on the staff corridor tile ONLY. Students report the noise during evening prep. "Koi koi koi" has become a joke in the dormitories. Further, the cane is not a teaching aid. Madam has now been spoken to three times. - Vice Principal
  • Punishment Book (extract)

MON Obi E. 14 strokes "late" TUE Eze N. 20 strokes "looked at me" WED Whole SS3 kneel, 1 hr "noise" THU Chukwu P. 12 strokes "breathing loudly" Signed: A.O. (In the margin, pressed hard:) WHO WILL STOP HER?
  • Sick Bay Register

2 Apr Okeke, Chidi "Cannot sleep." Says he hears heels in the corridor at night. Given Panadol. 3 Apr Madu, Obinna Same complaint. 5 Apr Bello, Tunde Same complaint. Shaking.

FAQ

Questions players ask

Is Madam Koi Koi free?

Yes. It's free to download and play, with no ads and no in-game purchases.

What do I need to play?

A 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and about 400 MB of space. It runs on integrated graphics on the lower quality settings. Headphones help a lot.

Is it on Mac, Linux, consoles or phones?

Not yet. Version 1.0 is for Windows only.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC". Is it safe?

That message appears for new games from small studios whose installers aren't yet code-signed. Click "More info" and then "Run anyway". Only download the installer from the link on this website.

How scary is it?

It's a horror game with jumpscares, sudden loud sounds, flashing lights, references to violence and stylized depictions of dead students. We recommend it for ages 16 and over. Easy difficulty and the reduce-flashing option make it gentler.

How many endings are there?

Two. What you find, and what you do with it, decides which one you get.

Where are my saves?

On your own PC, in %APPDATA%\Madam Koi Koi. The game saves at checkpoints automatically, and you can use three manual save slots from the pause menu.

Can I stream it or make videos?

Yes, including on monetised channels. Reviews and commentary are welcome too. Please don't present the game as your own or share its files. See section 2 of the EULA.

Is Madam Koi Koi a real legend?

Yes. Madam Koi Koi is a well-known urban legend in Nigerian and West African boarding schools. The legend belongs to everyone who grew up hearing it. Our game is our own telling of it.

Does the game collect my data?

No. Version 1.0 doesn't collect, send or sell any personal data. See our privacy policy.

Something else? See Support or get in touch.

The gate is open. For now.

Free on Windows. Headphones on, lights off.
